Hey everyone!
Another week has passed, and we’re soon heading into April!
Earlier this week, I took two of these new gut and skin tablets at breakfast. Although the bottle advised taking only 2 tablets a day, 1 with each meal, I decided to take them both at once. I didn’t think the consequence would be that bad. But it made me feel nauseous, though that feeling eventually passed.
Just like feeding our spiritual bodies [Matthew 4:4], the probiotics in the tablets are good for you, but overloading can lead to unpleasant outcomes. If we truly understood the discomfort that comes from being unsettled (like after taking too many tablets) or burdened (similar to how we might feel if we hold off reading the Word), we will likely avoid it. Thinking it’s bad for us and not able to keep it up.
Think of it like this, if you eat every meal of the day, it’s nourishing. But if you overload on just one meal, it can overwhelm you and make you feel unsettled or in a food coma. Not to mention, your undernourished at the other meals of the day. We need time to digest the Word. Consistency is key. Without discipline, when we find ourselves hungry for the Word, we may rush through it and take in too much at once – if having “too much Word” is a bad thing. Just like with the tablets, if we haven’t engaged with the Word in a while, putting effort in to read enough to make up for the times we didn’t read can feel overbearing. Since, its like an overload, not just in reading but in time.
For instance, if you miss a few weeks and then try to catch up by consuming a lot all at once, it can feel overwhelming and make you reluctant to engage again. The truth is that it wouldn’t have such a negative effect if you take it daily, just as the Bible encourages us to engage consistently [Matthew 6:51].
We often don’t realize the consequences until they hit us, and then we regret it. This applies to many areas of life. You may notice that if you don’t start your day with Jesus, it affects the remainder of your day. If you have a lot of time but have been neglecting your spiritual health [Matthew 6:11], trying to make up for it can feel burdensome since it consumes so much of your time. Just like you might experience eating at a buffet! And your eyes are bigger than your stomach…or YOLO. Or maybe your grandma insists you eat seconds and thirds, incase you won’t already full.
God, you amaze me!
